The South Africa region is rich in valuable minerals deposit. The discovery of gold and diamonds in the eighteenth century by colonial powers contributed to the violent conflict and apartheid. Today the region is the most developed in Africa; however, it suffers the highest percentage of the world's HIV/AIDS infections.

The countries in the region include: Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, South-Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
